Curriculum

The curriculum offers a variety of experiences designed to inspire each pianist to a new level of musical understanding and performance.  Each participant will receive private lessons with our Vienna-trained artist faculty prior to rehearsing with orchestra.  Classes will present a background of 18th century performance style and culture, including the relationship between Mozart's opera style and characterizations and his piano concerti.  Mozart's cadenza style will be examined.  To experience the broader framework of the classical era, there will be excursions to nearby castles, including the amazing renaissance-era Schloss Rosenburg with its falconry demonstrations.  We will visit the musical highlights in and around Vienna, including the homes and museums of Mozart (Figarohaus), Haydn, and Beethoven.  In addition to our course events, all participants in the Piano*Fest*Austria Piano Concerti program are welcome to attend other course programs and events of the Altenburg Music Academy which will be taking place at the abbey during our stay.

Concerto Study Course

     July 25 - August 8, 2010

A maximum of 10 talented pianists of any age (students and teachers!) will be accepted to study a single movement of any original Mozart Concerto (i.e. K175 - K595), any Haydn Concerto, or Beethoven Concerto (No. 1 or No. 2 only), and to rehearse and perform this movement with the Wiener Residenz Orchestrer at the conclusion of the Course.  The two-week long program will immerse participants in the Classical style through additional study of solo and four-hand repertoire, and coaching in Lieder and opera accompaniment.

Participants chosen by audition.

Parents, teachers and music lovers are invited to attend all events as Auditors.

Conducting for Pianists

As a supplementary experience open to participants in the Concerto Courses, the Festival offers the opportunity for selected pianists to study conducting.  This mini-course includes conducting theory, preparation techniques with soloists, 2-piano rehearsals of concerti, observation and discussion of professional conductors in Festival Concert rehearsals, culminating in a short rehearsal experience with the Wiener Residenz Orchester.

Repertoire
Any original Mozart Concerto (i.e. K175 - K595), any Haydn Concerto, or Beethoven Concerto (No. 1 or No. 2 only).  For programming considerations, duplicate concerti cannot be accepted for the Soloists Course of complete works.  However, duplicate concerti will be accepted in the Study Course.
